How Long Does Oxy-Powder Take to Work?
If you are constipated and considering Oxy-Powder, the first thing you probably want to know is: how quickly will it work?
The short answer is that Oxy-Powder usually works overnight. Most people take it before bed and have a bowel movement the following morning—sometimes as soon as they get up, and sometimes after drinking water or eating breakfast.
If you are more severely constipated, you may first notice gurgling, gas or movement in your gut before having a full bowel movement. In my experience, most people begin to respond within one to two days, but established constipation can take longer and should not be rushed.
I have sold and personally used Oxy-Powder since 2006. The guidance in this article combines the manufacturer’s directions with what I have learned from supporting customers in Ireland for 20 years.

The typical Oxy-Powder results timeline
Everyone responds differently, but this is a realistic guide based on my experience:
- The first night: Take Oxy-Powder before your main sleep period, ideally at least two hours after your last meal, with a full glass of water.
- The following morning: Many people have their first bowel movement after waking, drinking water or eating breakfast.
- Within one to two days: Someone who is more constipated may initially pass gas and feel movement before having a fuller bowel motion.
- After two to three days: If the bowel is moving two or three times daily, pressure, bloating and discomfort should be noticeably easier.
- After five to seven days: A person completing a structured cleanse should generally feel considerably more comfortable.
Oxy-Powder beginning to work is not necessarily the same as the bowel being fully cleared. One bowel movement can bring welcome relief, but someone who has been constipated for weeks—or who moves only every seven to ten days—may need more time and medical assessment.
Why I usually recommend starting with two capsules
Global Healing’s suggested cleanse directions begin with four capsules at bedtime, taken with a full glass of water at least two hours after the last meal. The manufacturer advises increasing by two capsules on subsequent nights if the desired response is not achieved.
In practice, I often suggest that a first-time customer begins more gently with two capsules, increasing by one capsule on the following night if necessary.
Why? Most people still have to get up, go to work, care for children, drive and live their normal lives. Beginning with a lower amount may take slightly longer, but it helps the customer find their individual dose with fewer surprises and less urgency.
My usual aim during a cleanse is two to three bowel movements a day. The manufacturer’s target is three to five. I prefer the more manageable approach for many of my customers, particularly those who are sensitive to supplements or cannot remain close to a toilet all day.
Always read the label and do not exceed the recommended dose. If you are unsure which approach is appropriate for you, ask me, your pharmacist or another healthcare professional before increasing it.
What if two capsules do nothing overnight?
Do not assume that Oxy-Powder has failed after one night.
If there has been no response, I would normally suggest increasing from two capsules to three the following night. Some people need three, four or more capsules before they find the amount that works for them.
The important point is to increase steadily—not impulsively. Do not take another dose every hour or repeatedly take capsules throughout the day trying to force a result. I once heard from a customer who had taken two capsules every hour and reached 18 capsules before her bowel began to move. That is not a safe or sensible way to use the product.
If someone is very uncomfortable, I may sometimes suggest a small daytime dose before food, followed by their planned bedtime dose, but that advice depends on the individual situation. Contact me first rather than creating your own rapid-dosing schedule.
If constipation has not improved after using a laxative for a week, the HSE advises contacting your GP.
What does it feel like when Oxy-Powder starts working?
During the first few nights, you may notice:
- gurgling or movement in the abdomen;
- passing more gas than usual;
- loose or watery stools;
- some urgency, particularly with a stronger dose;
- mild gripping sensations as gas moves through the bowel.
Gurgling can continue for the first three or four nights and then settle. Gas may smell stronger when you have been constipated, but this alone does not prove that you have “toxins” or harmful bacteria in the bowel.
Loose stool is an expected effect of Oxy-Powder. However, severe pain, persistent cramping, weakness, dizziness or diarrhoea that leaves you unable to manage normal activities is not something to push through. Reduce the dose, keep hydrated and seek professional advice if symptoms are significant or continue.
What can make Oxy-Powder work faster—or more slowly?
How constipated you are
Someone with occasional constipation may respond overnight. Someone passing stool only once every week or two is unlikely to empty their bowel after a single dose. It took time for that degree of constipation to develop, and trying to force a dramatic clear-out can be uncomfortable and potentially unsafe.
If this describes you, please speak with your GP. Long-term constipation can lead to faecal impaction and may require medical treatment.
The amount you take
A larger dose may produce a faster or stronger response, but it also increases the likelihood of urgency and watery stools. The goal is to find the lowest amount that produces an effective, manageable response.
Food and timing
I recommend leaving about two hours after your evening meal before taking Oxy-Powder, especially after a heavy meal. Taking it on top of a full stomach may leave you feeling gurgly, pressured or queasy.
In my experience, a diet high in heavy or highly processed foods can make the bowel slower, while adequate fibre and fluids support more regular movement.
Hydration and movement
Drink a full glass of water with your capsules and keep your fluid intake steady throughout the day. The HSE recommends plenty of fluids, increased fibre and regular activity to support constipation. The European Food Safety Authority considers a total daily water intake of approximately 2 litres for women and 2.5 litres for men adequate under moderate conditions; this includes water from food and all drinks, and individual needs vary.
Changes in routine
Travel, flights, time differences, unfamiliar food, stress and ignoring the urge to go can all interrupt a normal bowel routine. I often hear from customers whose constipation began while they were away from home.
Can opening the capsule make it work faster?
Global Healing confirms that the capsules can be opened and the powder mixed with water. This is particularly useful for customers who find capsules difficult to swallow.
Pinch the capsule in the middle, empty the powder into a glass of water and stir well. Some sediment will settle, so you may need to add a little more water, stir and drink again to take the full amount.
The manufacturer says this is as effective as swallowing the capsule whole. In my own experience, some customers feel that taking the powder directly in water allows it to begin working a little sooner, although individual responses vary.
When should a shift worker take it?
Think in terms of your main sleep period rather than a particular time on the clock.
If you work nights and sleep during the day, you could take Oxy-Powder in the morning before bed. You may then expect your bowel to move after you wake in the afternoon or early evening.
Whenever you take it, plan around your responsibilities and access to a toilet. Do not begin a stronger cleanse the night before a long drive, a work shift or an appointment. One customer did this and then took an anti-diarrhoeal medicine because she needed to drive for several hours. A cleanse cannot be expected to finish in one convenient bowel movement, and taking another medicine to stop it may work against what you are trying to achieve. Ask a pharmacist or GP before combining bowel medicines.
The most common reasons customers think it has not worked
In my experience, the usual reasons are:
- taking one or two capsules for only one night and expecting severe constipation to be completely resolved;
- not gradually finding the individual dose that works;
- taking it too soon after a heavy meal;
- not drinking enough fluid;
- taking a large amount without planning to remain near a toilet;
- expecting one bowel movement to equal a full cleanse;
- stopping before the bowel has had time to respond.
Many customers respond well when they find an appropriate amount and use it as directed, but more is not always better. Follow the instructions and give your body time.
A customer who is severely constipated needs a different approach
I have supported customers who move their bowels only once every seven to fourteen days. Some are so uncomfortable that they have reduced or stopped eating and are relying mainly on drinks.
That is not ordinary occasional constipation. I encourage these customers to speak with their GP and I support them more cautiously, sometimes checking in by phone or WhatsApp about the amount taken, bowel movements, gas, discomfort, food and fluid intake.
The aim is steady, comfortable progress—not an aggressive overnight purge. Once the bowel begins to move, passing gas alone can relieve considerable pressure. After two or three days of regular movement, most people should feel noticeably more comfortable. If they do not, I want to speak with them and would often advise medical review.
When not to wait for Oxy-Powder to work
Do not continue self-treating constipation or keep increasing a laxative if you have warning signs of a possible obstruction or another medical problem.
Contact your GP, an out-of-hours GP or an emergency department promptly if you have:
- severe or worsening abdominal pain;
- a hard, very swollen or increasingly distended abdomen;
- vomiting or feeling that pressure is making you likely to vomit;
- an inability to pass gas as well as stool;
- significant loss of appetite alongside worsening abdominal symptoms;
- blood in your stool or bleeding from your bottom;
- unexplained weight loss, persistent tiredness or a lasting change in bowel habit.
The HSE also advises speaking with a GP if constipation does not improve with treatment, regularly lasts a long time, or is accompanied by persistent bloating.
My advice after 20 years with Oxy-Powder
For most customers, the simple rule remains: take Oxy-Powder before bed and expect to poo the following morning.
If you are more constipated, the first signs may be gurgling, gas and movement, with a fuller response developing over one to two days. Start gently, increase according to the instructions or individual guidance, remain well hydrated and plan your cleanse around real life.
If you are ready to begin, you can purchase Oxy-Powder from The Wellbeing Clinic. When it arrives, read my step-by-step Oxy-Powder instructions before taking it.
If you have questions, contact me for guidance. If constipation is persistent, complicated or affecting your ability to eat and function normally, you can also book a Digestive Health Review so we can look more closely at your bowel pattern, diet, routine and next steps. This does not replace assessment by your GP where medical investigation is needed.
This article is for general information and does not replace individual medical advice. Oxy-Powder is intended for adults. Read the product label before use and speak with your GP or pharmacist if you have a medical condition, take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are uncertain whether a laxative is appropriate for you.
